Born in Aveiro in 1966, João Carlos began his academic career at the Calouste Gulbenkian Music Conservatory in Aveiro. He then opted for the acoustic electronics and materials business when he went to the Institute of Audio Research in New York. Later he took a course at the Telecommunications Studies Center in Aveiro. Between 1982 and 1983 he was the broadcaster and presenter of the radio he co-founded, Rádio Independente in Aveiro.

In 1986, while studying in New York, he worked at the Portuguese Radio Station in Newark, New Jersey, which belonged to Mr. Luis Pires, the representative of RTP in New York. In 1997 he founded and became treasurer of the Association of Professional Sound Technicians who represent the Audio Engineering Society in Portugal and in 1999 he became a member of AES.

In 1981 the name JOCAVI appears for the first time when it started to manufacture loudspeakers for discotheques and music bands. In 1992 he founded the company JOCAVI, Painéis Acústicos Lda., Which designs, develops and manufactures insulation materials and acoustic panels for the professional audio and construction industries. In 2005, he founded the consulting company PRESTIGE, Consultadoria e Design em Acústica, Lda., Which executes projects for the professional audio and construction industries.

Since 1988 he has been a sound engineer and front of house for various events and projects such as Delfins, Resistência, Pedro Abrunhosa e Bandemónio, as well as for international bands that played in Portugal such as B.B. King, 10,000 Maniacs, Pill, Transvision Vamp, Fafá de Belém, Elba Ramalho and Caetano Veloso among others.

João Carlos is responsible for the design and registration of numerous models of acoustic panels and among them are some of the most iconic, known by the professional music market as CERAFLECTOR or CORALREEF. In addition, he is the author of the book “Demystifying Acoustics”, which will be published shortly in English.
